Hurrah For Rep. Justin Amash: His Smackdown Of GOP Mudslingers Was Spot On

Just because Michigan Rep. Justin Amash won his primary doesn’t mean he is going to say nice things about his opponent in his election night speech.

After defeating Brian Ellis in Tuesday’s Republican primary, Amash delivered remarks to supporters and slammed Ellis for his campaign tactics.

In his remarks, Amash, a libertarian-leaning Republican elected to Congress in 2010, suggested he had no interest in receiving a congratulatory call from his opponent.

“Brian Ellis, you owe my family and this community an apology,” Amash said in his speech.

“You had the audacity to try to call me today after running a campaign that was called ‘the nastiest in the country,’” Amash continued. “I ran for office to stop people like you.”

Ellis, according to, left a voicemail for Amash to congratulate him on his win.

During the campaign, Ellis, who had the backing of business interests, ran an ad including footage of Amash being called “Al Qaeda’s best friend in Congress.”

Amash also used his remarks to take aim at supporters of Ellis, including former Rep. Pete Hoekstra. “I want to say to lobbyist Pete Hoekstra,” Amash said. “You are a disgrace. And I’m glad we could hand you one more loss before you fade into total obscurity and irrelevance.”
